In light of press reports referring to increases in shipping rates in view of the fruit export season, it is necessary to clarify a few points:
There is not - and cannot be - an agreement regarding values, increases, or any type of modification of shipping rates. Prices are established exclusively by negotiations or price offers that are accepted (or not) between shipping companies and exporters, according to supply and demand, and respond to the characteristics of the route, terms, type of contract, volumes, dates and the availability of ships and containers for dry or refrigerated cargo.
Global fuel prices have been on the rise due to geopolitical conflicts, which translates into higher transportation costs. Additionally, ensuring the availability of ships for a given period of time increases freight costs. However, in the context of supply and demand, there are also falling rates.
Camport is a trade association that represents various companies in the maritime and port world, but it does not participate in commercial aspects that involve partners. Together with ASOEX, Camport presented to the Government a package of 12 measures, which only include actions to improve the management and operation of port terminals during the high season, and in no case price agreements or tariff commitments for shipping freight.
