The fruit growing team from the Ministry of Economic and Productive Development of Río Negro visited various cherry producing companies in Chimpay to analyze the damage caused by the storm that hit the area a few days ago.
Although a significant portion of the fruit had already been harvested at the time of the rainfall, authorities are still conducting damage assessments in order to take appropriate measures.
“We are always subject to climate changes, although the harvests were at a percentage greater than 80%, only four days of harvest were lost with exportable volumes and/or very good quality fruit for the Domestic Market”, highlighted the Secretary of Fruit Growing, Facundo Fernández.
As official media from the Argentine government explain, climate change has become noticeable year after year, and although cherry producing companies have tools to protect against frost and mechanized irrigation systems to deal with storms with heavy rain in short periods of time, the fruits absorb water through the skin instead of through the root, and this causes the shell to break and the fruit to be lost.
Harvest volumes have been achieved according to forecasts and the quality is, as always, very satisfactory. Cherries are an emblematic product for Río Negro with growth potential in a qualitative segment of great demand, both in the domestic and foreign markets.
