The agrochemical industry is constantly working to find solutions to the numerous phytosanitary threats that occur throughout the year in orchards. One of them is the well-known San José scale, a primary pest in pome, stone and walnut trees.

Syngenta, a company specializing in agro-industrial solutions, has just launched a new biorational insecticide, which revolutionizes and complements the alternatives currently available on the market.

“INSEGAR® is an insecticide that has the particularity of acting as an insect growth regulator; what does this mean? It interrupts the specific morphological transformations of the insect. It acts as a mimic of the juvenile hormone and depending on the pest species we are controlling, it interrupts the morphological changes from mobile to fixed states, from eggs to larvae, from larvae to pupa.” explained Paulo Rivara, Marketing Manager of Syngenta, Central-North region.

INSEGAR® also has a translaminar action, penetrating the plant tissues, controlling insects by contact and ingestion with an excellent and long residual effect.

Action in cherry trees

In the specific case of cherry orchards, INSEGAR® acts directly on St. Joseph scale, as an alternative treatment to the molecules and commercial products currently on the market.

“It is a product that, thinking about San José scale, we are going to apply at the end of winter with the objective of altering the immature stages of the scale, avoiding the transformations from black caps to grey caps, or second stages; in the case of males, from pseudo pupa to winged male, in this way we achieve “Effective control from the beginning”, as the INSEGAR® slogan says”, said Paulo Rivara.

Among the main attributes of INSEGAR®, its high efficiency in control stands out, as well as its long control period and its excellent adherence to plant structures thanks to its formulation, which makes it very robust against washing by rain and morning dew, allowing for longer control.

“As it is a new mode of action, it complements the anti-resistance treatments that we know today; rotation is crucial and indispensable to be able to maintain a balance with the active ingredients that we have today. INSEGAR® is selective on natural enemies, that is, it also presents a sustainable and environmentally friendly look, in addition to being very safe for operators thanks to its GREEN label.”, explained Syngenta's Marketing Manager, North-Central zone, Paulo Rivara.

Its residual effect offers up to 5 weeks of protection, thus preventing populations of San José scale from migrating to the fruit, which translates into greater profitability for producers.

INSEGAR® joins Syngenta's wide range of phytosanitary products as a revolutionary insecticide of excellent quality, safe for both orchards and workers, resistant to rain wash-off and highly efficient. Although this product is described for the control of St. Joseph scale in pome and stone fruit, it is also effective in combating moths and whiteflies in tomatoes, and work is already underway on extensions of its label for applications in other fruit species.
