The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) states that intense or moderate degradation already affects one third of the world's soil, and its recovery is so slow that it would take 1,000 years to create a few centimeters of topsoil.

Phenomena such as erosion, loss of organic carbon, salinization, compaction, acidification and pollution are the main causes of the current deterioration of the soil. 

Because of all these threats, we put food security at risk, as the UN warns. Global Land Outlook (GLO2), Land Restoration for Recovery and Resilience, published in 2022 by the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification.

One of the most effective and sustainable practices to improve the soil is the periodic application of high-quality humic substances, since they are a fundamental part in the maintenance and improvement of the physical, biological and chemical properties of the soil, and have motivated thousands of researchers to understand its structure and its relationship with the transport and retention of organic and inorganic contaminants. 

Current scientific studies show that soil fertility is largely determined by the content of humic acids. Their high cation exchange capacity (CEC), oxygen content as well as above-average water retention capacity are the reasons for the high value of using humic acids to improve soil fertility and plant growth. 

The most important characteristic of humic acids is their ability to bind insoluble metal ions, oxides and hydroxides and release them slowly and continuously to plants when needed. Due to these properties, humic acids are known to produce three types of effects: physical, chemical and biological.
 

1. Physical Benefits:

  • Improves soil structure: Preventing high water and nutrient losses in light and sandy soils. In heavy and compact soils, soil aeration and water retention are improved. 
  • Prevent soil cracking, surface water runoff and soil erosion by increasing the ability of colloids to combine.

2. Chemical benefits:

  • Humic acids chemically change the binding properties of the soil.
  • Neutralize acidic and alkaline soils; regulate the pH value of soils.
  • Improve and optimize the absorption of nutrients and water by plants. 
  • It acts as a natural chelator of metal ions in alkaline conditions and promotes their absorption by the roots.
  • Rich in organic substances and minerals essential for plant growth.
  • Retain water-soluble inorganic fertilizers in the root zones and reduce their leaching.
  • They have extremely high cation exchange capacities.
  • Helps eliminate chlorosis caused by iron deficiency in plants.
  • Reduce the availability of toxic substances in soils.

3. Biological Benefits:

  • Humic acids biologically stimulate plant and microorganism activities.
  • Stimulates plant enzymes and increases their production.
  • It acts as an organic catalyst in many biological processes.
  • Stimulate the growth and proliferation of desirable microorganisms in the soil.
  • Increase the natural resistance of plants against diseases and pests.
  • It stimulates root growth, especially vertically, and allows for better nutrient absorption.
  • Increased respiration and root formation.
  • Improve yield quality, physical appearance and nutritional value.
