Representative of a Chilean company describes the atmosphere at the main wholesale fruit market in Guangzhou

Guangzhou remains the purchasing engine for all of China and the main distribution center, and while access to the main wholesale fruit market remains restricted, the recent easing of Covid-19 measures has generated a return in confidence among importers for this 2022-2023 season.

The first shipment of cherries will arrive in China on December 9 at the port of Hong Kong on the ship «Seaspan Brightness», containing 143 containers of cherries and an estimated volume of 2,578 tonnes.

Our team of correspondents in China spoke with Rodrigo Deik, representative for China and Asia of Verfrut, who said that the city of Guangzhou is slowly returning to normal, after more than 25 days under strict control on the movement of the population, as well as trade in general, due to restrictions caused by the pandemic. This situation strongly affected both wholesale and retail fruit markets, due to the low presence of buyers.

However, just a few days after the first shipment of Chilean cherries arrived by sea, the aforementioned situation has improved significantly following a surprise lifting of Covid-19 restrictions; the city has thus returned to almost normal operation with the opening of retail shops and fruit markets, thereby generating a noticeable increase in demand for Chilean cherries in the Jiangnan market.

Guangzhou remains the purchasing engine for all of China and the main distribution center. Although access to the main wholesale fruit market in Guangzhou/China remains restricted and registration is required to access it, the recent easing of Covid-19 measures has generated a return in confidence among importers for this 2022-2023 season, a situation that occurred less than 10 days after the arrival of the first sea shipment of cherries from Chile.
