Tattersall-Daymsa, Evaluation of a post-harvest program to avoid thermal stress and enhance the accumulation of reserves in an adult cherry orchard.

AVIUM 2016-2018 Season

The stress suffered by the cherry tree after the harvest in the summer months substantially influences the quality of the buds, and this fact is observed much more markedly in years with warmer and drier summers than average, substantially affecting the quality of the following season's production.

In order to measure the effect of the Tattersall-Daymsa program on the levels of reserves in cherry buds after harvest, a study was carried out with the company AVIUM.

The effect of this program is based on mitigating water and thermal stress, causing this protocol to have several effects:

  • Reduction in leaf mass temperature.
  • Reduction of the negative effects caused by thermal and water stress
    • The protocol increases the concentration of antioxidant molecules that inhibit the toxic action of ROS (Reactive Oxygen Species) that cause aging and cell death.
  • It ensures proper functioning of the plant so that it can generate sufficient carbohydrates and thus avoid depleting its reserves.
    • Thus increasing the reserve levels in the buds for the next season.
  • Improving floral differentiation to obtain better quality flowers and fruits.
    • The protocol promotes the synthesis of phytohormones responsible for cell division and fattening.

Therefore, the objective of this research is focused on evaluating the effect of the protocol on the reserve parameters of the yolks (Starch), a parameter that has a decisive influence on:

  • The quality of the flowers
  • The quality of the fruits/production of the following season.

This trial was carried out at Agrícola Bandera Azul, in the Santa Lucía Garden in the commune of Molina, VII Region.

  • Bing about Gisela 6.
  • 889 Plants per hectare.

This research worked with three theses:

  • Witness without application.
  • Daymsa Protocol.
  • Raschel mesh 35 % x 2.1 Poly BC.

Thesis

Measurements.

  • Measuring leaf temperature.

The temperature on the underside of the leaf was measured every hour for 10 hours for each treatment on certain dates.

In this measurement it can be observed how the Tattersall-Daymsa treatment manages to lower the temperature of the leaf to the same level as the mesh.

  • Reservations in fruit centers.

At the beginning of winter, total Nitrogen, Arginine, Protein and Starch were measured in a sample of buds from the different theses.

Looking at the data, it can be seen how the protocol raises the levels of Starch, showing a statistically significant difference with the other two theses.

  • Production campaign 2017-2018.

The table shows the production results of the following campaign, finding that production is significantly improved with the application of the Tattersall-Daymsa strategy due to the better quality of the buds formed in the previous season thanks to the protocol.

Conclusions.

This research demonstrates the effectiveness of the Tattersall-Daymsa post-harvest program to increase bud reserves by the sum of its different effects, thus improving their conformation and ensuring better and greater productivity in the following campaign.
