“Innovation and climate change”: the topic that the Undersecretariat of Agriculture will address at Expo Chile Agrícola 2022

The seminar, which will be held on Thursday, October 6, between 2:00 and 3:30 p.m., at the Lo Valledor Wholesale Market, will feature presentations by authorities, academics and researchers.

This October 5 and 6, the largest agricultural training event in the country will return to the Lo Valledor Wholesale Market in the Pedro Aguirre Cerda commune. This is Expo Chile Agrícola 2022, a space that will feature seminars, a fair area, a farmers' market, cultural activities, and food trucks.

In this scenario, the Undersecretariat of Agriculture will address one of the issues that most concerns the portfolio, through the seminar: “Innovation as a tool to confront climate change.” This will take place on Thursday, October 6 between 2:00 and 3:30 p.m. and will feature four speakers.

The Undersecretary of Agriculture, José Guajardo Reyes, will open the day and present to the attendees the details of the project “Improving the resilience to climate change in small-scale agriculture”, an initiative implemented for five years in the dryland communes of the O'Higgins region, with an investment of US$$ 10 million (equivalent to more than 7 billion pesos) from the Climate Change Adaptation Fund.

The doctor and academic from the Geography Institute of the Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaíso, Ariel Muñoz, will give the talk “Beekeeping in Chile: Impacts and adaptation to climate change”. Later, the Regional Director of the Agricultural Research Institute of Minagri (INIA Quilamapu), Dr. Marcelino Claret, will give the presentation “Where to cultivate?: the advantages of Artificial Intelligence in decision-making”, a talk in which he will address concepts related to a thermal aptitude platform, a climate simulation chamber, smartfield and a digital laboratory. The closing of the seminar, meanwhile, will be in charge of the deputy manager of Geospatial Development of the Natural Resources Information Center of Minagri (CIREN), José Ossa, who will refer to the “Use of drones to monitor natural resources and develop precision agriculture”, also known as agriculture 4.0.

During the seminar, attendees will also be given the “Manual of good practices and lessons learned for adaptation to climate change”, prepared within the framework of the project implemented in the VI region.
