Markets and prices during Chinese New Year week

During this season, week 3 was key, since the celebration of the Chinese New Year or Spring Festival began right at the end of it, on Sunday, January 22.

On the other hand, together with week 2, they represented nearly 501 TP3T of the total cherry arrivals for the season in China, with approximately the equivalent of 9,000 containers. And it is for this reason that these two weeks are the most important for sales: on the one hand because of the concentration, and on the other because of the impact that this celebration generates on demand, which is the most important in China.

Thus, week 3 had at least 8 ships arriving, according to data from Fruitonline, and where the following stood out: AP MOLLER and COPIAPÓ ships, with an equivalent of 899 and 866 containers respectively. Ships with arrivals between January 16 and 22. 42% of the total lines, which totaled the equivalent of just over 4,184 containers.

Another logistical milestone was the Cool Magnus charter to Dalian, with approximately 263 equivalent containers, which arrived on January 18, following the first Cherry express to that port the previous week, with the GSL Tinos vessel (January 11).

Regarding the varieties, what was seen the most during week 3 were the varieties Lapins, Regina and Sweetheart.

Guangzhou market, which is the main market, was opening around 250-300 containers a day, at least. China's total was between 600 and 800 containers; as the week progressed, on the 18th there was less activity, as the market workers went away to celebrate the holiday, with the 21st being the last day with openings at around 9.30 am.

During this last day, the festive atmosphere could be experienced even in the market, with sounds of firecrackers in different areas throughout the morning and by 10-11 am there was very little activity left.

The market is expected to remain inactive for at least two days, and to resume on January 24 and 25. Activity in the Shanghai market dropped two to three days earlier than in Guangzhou.

Just as a reference, from general market reports from Guangzhou, prices at the beginning of the week rose slightly, around RMB 10 for good quality fruit, 2.5 kilo box versus the previous week, that was the 16th. For both Lapins and Regina. And finally suffered a downward adjustment towards the end of the week, more noticeable for Regina.

For example, for the 2.5 kg format, the adjustment was around RMB 40-50 less per box, and for Lapins around RMB 30. This happened at the end of the week.
