The report is part of the “Siembra por Chile” program and will be published every two weeks on the Ministry of Agriculture’s website.
The Undersecretary of Agriculture, José Guajardo Reyes, launched the Agroclimatic Report (RAC), an indicator that is part of the “Siembra por Chile” program of the Ministry of Agriculture, and that will deliver every 15 days, the country's agroclimatic scenario to support decision-making in the forestry and agricultural sector.
The instrument developed by the Agricultural Emergencies and Risk Management Section (SEGRA) of the Institutional Management Department of MINAGRI, will provide meteorological data, the impact by region, the situation of reservoirs, measures and recommendations.
The authority assessed the rainfall recorded this year, emphasizing that it far exceeds the rainfall recorded in 2021. "This situation is a temporary relief for the critical situation we are experiencing in our country, regarding the mega drought affecting the regions of Coquimbo, Valparaíso, Metropolitana, O'Higgins, El Maule, Ñuble, Biobío and La Araucanía," he said, but warned that "it does not mean that the mega drought condition will improve in the territory."
He added that “The regions of Ñuble, Biobío, La Araucanía, Los Ríos and Los Lagos, in general, mostly show a surplus situation compared to 2021, but we must wait until the end of the season to estimate whether we will have an average year of rainfall.”
Regarding solid precipitation, he noted that snow accumulation has been favorable this year. “If the snow continues, water availability in natural sources will improve in the summer, which is a positive factor for agriculture.”
Forecast for the next few days
According to the Chilean Meteorological Office, precipitation is expected from the Valparaíso region southwards on Wednesday, July 13. The estimated precipitation amounts between the Valparaíso and O'Higgins regions are between 5-25 mm; between the Maule and Biobío regions between 5-15 mm, while between the Araucanía and Los Lagos regions between 5-25 mm with 0-10 cm of snow are expected in the coastal mountain range and foothills.
As for minimum temperatures, local meteorological frosts (1.5 m from the ground surface) are expected in Coquimbo and La Araucanía over the next few days, while in the regions of Valparaíso, Metropolitana, Los Ríos and Los Lagos, local frosts at ground level are expected.
