Biostimulants: inputs that make the difference

Biostimulants: inputs that make the difference

In 2011 Green Has Italy, together with 11 other European companies, took the first step towards the foundation of EBIC: European Biostimulants Industry Council.

The European Biostimulant Industry Council promotes the role of biostimulants in achieving good production in terms of quantity and quality, in a cost-effective manner, helping producers to adapt to climate change.

EBIC has worked together with European authorities to develop the world's first law on biostimulants: Regulation EU 2019/1009 (entered into force on July 16, 2022 and taken as a reference by other non-European countries), to generate clarity in the market for these inputs.

Recently EBIC has presented a manifesto to EU policymakers, stakeholders and the wider community, to highlight the urgency of transformative actions in the agricultural sector during the next term of the EU Parliament and a Commission work programme for 2024-2029. This proposal identifies the action of biostimulants in:

  • Supporting the absorption and assimilation of elements provided by fertilizers, improving the efficiency of nutrient use. This increases food production while maximizing the effectiveness of other inputs and reducing the climate footprint of the fertilizers used;
  • Help optimize crop yield and quality, such as fruit number, grain protein content, leaf weight (vegetables) and other important characteristics, leading to less waste throughout the food chain;
  • Reduce nutrient losses to the environment, including soil nutrients, and the volatilization of certain nitrogen compounds that contribute to the greenhouse effect.

Currently, 3 specialties of Green Has Italy have been classified as biostimulants:

  • Eranthis, to mitigate the effects of abiotic stresses and improve water use by plants (WUE = Water Use Efficiency)
  • Siberian, to homogenize budding and flowering of deciduous fruit trees such as cherry, walnut, table grape, apple, etc. in case of inadequate accumulation of cold hours
  • Vivema Twin, to promote root development, stimulate microorganisms present in the rhizosphere and improve nutrient availability
