Chilean exporters in China took stock of the season

How did the market behave after the Chinese New Year?
Gonzalo Rubilar, Regional Director for Asia at Tutti Fruit.

Our correspondents in China spoke with two representatives of cherry exporting companies in China, who talked about how they viewed the end of the season, in particular, the period after the Chinese New Year.

Gonzalo Rubilar, Regional Director for Asia of Tutti Fruit, said that «The prices were super good for what is after the Chinese New Year. There was a lot of movement and the fruit sold quite well. I know that some had problems with the quality, that depends on how the fruit arrives and how long they had to wait, especially for those who arrived just after the New Year. There are a few days when the markets stop, so that fruit has to last between 4 and 6 days. For what arrived later, I understand that there were no major problems.«.

Rubilar added: «We were not involved in the post-Chinese New Year period, so we do not have detailed information, but this is what we have heard from companies and it highlights the good prices compared to the post-New Year days of previous seasons».

For his part, Braulio Diaz, Market Manager at Fruit Color (Gesex China) indicated that the post-CNY market ended surprisingly well: «The last sales were very similar to those of the best days before CNY, I don't think anyone expected that. However, it didn't start so well, in the Cisnes warehouse there were a lot of Regina with a fermented taste, a condition that lowered prices and everyone's expectations. After that warehouse was finally sold, the drastic decrease in volume added to the good condition of the new fruit that arrived generated a new boost, where the price improved in each warehouse.»

Among the most popular varieties were Regina and Kordia, with some Staccato also seen towards the end. China once again demonstrated how good it can pay for high-quality fruit.
