Cherries, stocks and the market on the verge of the Chinese New Year

Mercado Semana 1

During week 1 of 2023, around six ships arrived in China, with a total of 3,175 containers, including the Maersk Shams and Coyhaique ships, with 780 and 840 containers, respectively.

The variety that was most seen since the arrival of the vessels was the “Lapins”, which was noticed among the 60% and 70% of the ships, and also in wholesale markets.

For example, the Guangzhou market reflects that we are already approaching the peak of the season for sales, which continue in the afternoon, even with significant volume until the evening between 9 and 12 on some days. According to our correspondents in the Asian country, there are days when this market is estimated to have passed the barrier of 500 containers.

Although there have been some increases and decreases throughout week 1, the trend is that prices have remained stable. For the Santina variety, the average has dropped, as the last ones available on the market and some with observation grades in quality are becoming available. On the other hand, the price of the good Santina has increased, with the market rewarding the best quality cherries.

Lapins, for its part, showed an increase of between 40 and 60 Yuan per 5-kilo box, reaching prices similar to the Santina average, due to Lapins taking center stage as the main variety available.

On the verge of the Chinese New Year

Likewise, the Chinese New Year is just around the corner, exactly two weeks away from the great celebration that begins on January 22nd and it can be noted that with this event, there is clearly a high diversity of sales formats and varieties of cherries. It can be seen that the packaging favors the use of yellow and red colors, which are distinctive and symbolic during the Chinese New Year festivities.

This has influenced the good activity of the cherry market in China, especially for buyers looking for stocks for sales through e-commerce platforms and online sales.
