ExpertTips: Caliper in cherry trees

Context

Fruit production is becoming more demanding and competitive in terms of quality and sizes in order to achieve adequate profitability.

On the other hand, the climate is changing worldwide. High-quality fruit production orchards are suffering from low temperatures in spring and excessive radiation and temperature during the summer, but achieving orchards with excellent root systems that allow them to be properly nourished and hydrated is key.

Problematic

Achieving high yields without sacrificing the size and condition of the fruit is a great challenge. Achieving high production and maintaining it over time is not an easy task.

Every time we have a high production, the trees are left with a smaller nutritional reserve and the differentiation process is affected, which normally results in low production in the following season.
Market solutions

There are a number of products on the market with the specific objective of improving the size of the fruit. Among several alternatives, algae extracts such as Ascophillum nodossum, Durvillea antarctica, Ecklonia Maxima, among others, have proven to be an effective tool for increasing yields without losing quality.

However, the choice of the type of algae is important: the type, the origin, the extraction method, etc. This will largely determine its effectiveness.

M&V Recommendation

If you want to increase sizes naturally, activating the plant's complete physiology, our suggestion is to use CALIBRA from the French company Goemar. CALIBRA is natural Ascophyllum nodosum 100% algae, harvested manually and subjected to extreme conditions, which is why it generates multiple components that help to alleviate abiotic stress.

-CALIBRA improves the fluorescence of chloroplasts, thus allowing the plant to perform greater photosynthesis.

– The orchard with CALIBRA captures CO2 and light energy more efficiently, which implies greater efficiency in energy use, translating into a greater accumulation of reserves in the buds for the next season.

– Stimulates the production of polyphenols such as anthocyanins, making the fruit's color uniform

When we use CALIBRA:

-It can be used in the early stages of fruit development at a concentration of 200 cc/100 liters of water. Between 2 and 3 liters per hectare.

How many times to use it?

The number of applications will depend on the fruit load. In high load conditions we have managed to carry out up to 5 applications, achieving optimal size, condition and uniformity of the fruit. We challenge you to use a product with a different technology than what exists on the market.
