An active frontal system will affect the south-central part of the country from Tuesday to Thursday; the regions where it will have the greatest impact will be Coquimbo, Valparaíso, Santiago, O'Higgins, Maule, Ñuble and Biobío.
“The frontal system, which will be concentrated mainly between Tuesday and Wednesday, will leave between 30 and 50 mm of rain. The precipitation will be accompanied by winds between 30 and 40 km per hour, with even gusts of 60 km per hour,” explained Patricio González, M.Sc., Research Professor in Agroclimatology, Citra, University of Talca.
The frontal system is also expected to present itself in the form of snow in some areas of the central north zone.
"For the agricultural sector, there will be a moderate contribution of rain and snow, since the deficits in the agricultural areas of the central valley range between 40 and 60%," added Patricio González.
As the week draws to a close, the rains will stop and temperatures will drop: “In the central region, on Friday, Saturday and Sunday it will only be partly cloudy, with a cold and humid atmosphere. On average, minimum temperatures are expected to be between 2 and 3 degrees Celsius and maximum temperatures between 7 and 10 degrees.
“Agricultural activity is in a vegetative recess this season, so there should be no damage. These rains will help to increase the capacity of the reservoirs and contribute with a few centimeters of snow in the mountain range. However, larger amounts of rain and longer duration are required to reduce the current significant deficits,” concluded Patricio González, Agroclimatologist at the University of Talca.
It is worth remembering that this year has been marked by La Niña, a phenomenon that contributes to blocking the rains, making them of weak intensity and of short duration.
