This disease causes root tumors, galls at the base of the trunk, weakening of plants, low productivity and even death of plants if not managed correctly. Tavan Chile provides keys for comprehensive management.
One of the main pathologies that affect cherry orchards is bacterial canker. But there are also others that generate effects as adverse as bacteria. Pseudomonas syringae.
Among them is collar gall, a phytosanitary problem that is spreading as fast as the surface area of cherry trees planted in the country. This pathology is caused by Agrobacterium tumefaciens, which is present in most agricultural soils.
“Cherry neck galls affect cherry plants mainly by strangling the roots,” explains José Ignacio Tagle,South Central Zone of Tavan Chile, a Spanish chemical company with more than 30 years of experience in applied biotechnology in different crops and with a broad reputation in the management of wood diseases and fungi.
“These galls or tumors begin to grow on the roots and end up rendering them useless for the absorption of water and nutrients,”adds the agricultural technician specializing in wood diseases.
Given their tumor-like characteristics (rounded, porous and hard), galls are easy to spot in the field, as these noticeable protuberances begin to appear on the surface, especially closer to the neck of the plant.
This disease produces tumors in the roots, galls at the base of the trunk, weakening of the plants, low productivity and even the death of plants if not managed correctly, which is why Tavan Chile provides keys for comprehensive management.
“Plants with a lot of disease pressure begin to weaken, stopping vegetative growth, and one of the consequences of plants having small leaves is that they produce small, poor-quality fruit,”Tagle explains.
To prevent this disease from causing damage to the orchard, and therefore to the quality of production, the Tavan specialist explains that it is essential to keep the affected plants as vigorous as possible, based on good nutrition, soil improvements and the application of rooting agents.
A comprehensive solution
One solution that Tavan Chile offers to producers is an innovative biotechnological treatment that acts by reducing the development of the disease. It is WERT, a zero-waste systemic product with organic certification, which is applied directly to the galls, complemented by applications via irrigation.
“Our recommendation is to apply WERT directed at the gall. Along with this, make applications via irrigation, especially during root growth dates, spring and post-harvest, in addition to complementing with the Tavan Roots rooting agent,”adds Tagle.
