WERT®: Biotechnology applied to crops

With more than 30 years of presence in the global market, Tavan was born with the mission of putting biotechnology at the service of agriculture; with this vocation in research, development and innovation, various categories of products have been formulated aimed at being a real, effective and novel solution to the various problems that arise every day in agricultural production. Tavan Chile incorporated several seasons ago one of the most effective and powerful tools developed by the company, the biotechnological product WERT®, which has been actively developed and evaluated in local conditions, becoming a valuable and sustainable solution for many farmers and fruit producers.

The formulation and active ingredients in WERT®, like all Tavan products, have their origin in biotechnology practices and principles that allow the isolation, reproduction and concentration of secondary metabolites produced by certain antagonistic microorganisms, defined according to the purpose of the product to be obtained (resistance or tolerance to stress, reinforcement of walls and membranes, modification of plant salinity, activation of defenses, stimulation of growth, etc.); to stabilize these molecules, increase their effectiveness and facilitate their use as an agricultural formulation, an exclusive system of coupling of organic molecules with a metallic compound of the micronutrient type (copper, manganese, zinc, etc.) was developed. The base active ingredients obtained from this coupling are then subjected to complex mechanisms that, based on the application of different states of pressure and temperature, manage to definitively consolidate the molecule, which allows obtaining a liquid mixture stable at room temperature with a long expiration date. This principle gives the products high concentrations of active ingredients, consistent efficacy graphs over time and high-impact results. WERT® is a versatile and safe product that can be applied via foliar and irrigation, depending on the purpose, the species and the phenological stage in which the plant is found.


The obtaining of molecules of biological origin results in innocuous, organic-based and effective products; WERT® has proven to be very suitable and easy to incorporate into any field management program with safety thanks to its high effectiveness and consistency; additionally, to date there is no precedent that demonstrates any type of resistance caused by the repeated application of this type of products, since its action mechanisms never intervene in the metabolism of cells. WERT® specifically corresponds to an isolate of molecules or biotoxins obtained from bacteria and fungi, with a wide power of penetration in the plant and excellent systemicity, mainly descending (basipetalous), a characteristic that explains its effectiveness in roots and lignified structures. The metabolites in WERT® raise the SAR in the plant, generating immediate response such as drying of gums, healing of wounds or cankers, activation of sap flow and stimulation of growth, which explains the strong responses observed in shoots, depending on the time of application. Furthermore, the manufacturing process concentrates a high quantity of bioelements that are absorbed by the plant according to its needs, causing a harmonious nutritional balance.

WERT® began to be developed in Chile in 2005, and has been continuously evaluated to date. The product has been validated and is used in species such as table grapes, walnuts, cherries, stone fruits, etc., proving to be a genuine alternative and complement to the usual strategies, which allows, among other things, to improve the sustainability of the programs and regulate the use of the products.


The potency of the compounds in WERT® actively stimulates the growth and recovery of affected plants; this additional effect, which is expressed in the growth of shoots and bud sprouting even in areas of the plant affected by lesions, turns out to be one of the most spectacular consequences of incorporating WERT® into management programs.


The success and consistency of WERT® in the fields explains the extraordinary growth in the use of the product, which has increased in just 4 years from 1,650 hectares treated in 2016 to more than 6,800 hectares during 2020.
