El Tambo Nurseries enters the ownership of Vitrofarm

Both companies seek to promote the development of new products

Viveros El Tambo is a company with more than 30 years of experience in the production of fruit plants for commercial orchards, with access to cutting-edge genetics. For its part, Vitrofarm is a laboratory with great expertise in the propagation and marketing of clonal rootstocks of walnut, cherry and stone fruit trees through in-vitro propagation techniques, as well as varieties of hazelnuts.

“This alliance is a complement. On the one hand, Viveros El Tambo requires rootstocks, and in vitro propagation generates highly healthy plants. In this sense, it is a user of the laboratory. In addition, Vitrofarm gives us the possibility of propagating other species. It specializes in walnut trees, a species that is difficult to propagate in vitro,” explains Samuel Escalante, director of Viveros El Tambo. “We contribute to Vitrofarm because we are a nursery positioned in the sale of cherry, stone fruit and vine plants. We have history, equipment, we are in the market and we have the genetics,” he adds.

Nicolás Manterola, partner and director of Vitrofarm, says: “One nursery contributes to the other. They complement each other in order to meet the objectives proposed by both companies. On the one hand, Vitrofarm can fulfil its production programmes, obtain new genetics, exploit the world of innovation, new markets and different species, such as cherry trees, stone fruit and vines. Viveros El Tambo can guarantee quality micropropagated seedlings and control the quality and volumes of plants they need to meet their commercial programmes.”

For his part, Gonzalo Rivera, partner and director of the same company and director of Armony, a company dedicated to the valorization of organic waste, transforming it into natural 100% compost, adds: “the great advantage of an integration between a nursery and a meristematic laboratory is that the production of a plant that grows from a few cells to the production of a certified finished plant can be started.”

They all emphasize that the alliance will also entail benefits for clients and potential clients. “Viveros El Tambo can continue to ensure sales of plants with a high level of health. And when we look for propagation options for some genetics, we can offer everything from the beginning of multiplication to the moment it reaches the client,” says Escalante.

“The ones who benefit the most are our potential clients, since both companies focus on carrying out the production processes with great care to obtain plants that deliver maximum qualitative potential. We supply the market and our clients with different genetics, varieties and species that guarantee the quality of the plants so that they obtain greater profitability in their projects,” adds Manterola.

“Chile needs to increase the production of new rootstocks that have better characteristics for different species, areas and climates. To do this, it is essential to have high-standard meristematic laboratories that can produce them,” says Rivera.
