From 8 to 10 May, at the Rimini Expo Centre, in two pavilions of the exhibition centre, there will be talks about innovation in the fields of fruit growing, soilless cultivation, horticulture and mechanisation.
At Macfrut, innovation in the sector can be seen first-hand, on an area of around 3,000 square metres, divided into two pavilions: one dedicated to fruit growing (pavilion C1 – Agri Field Solution), and another to soilless crops, market and industrial horticulture, and mechanisation (pavilion A1 – Machinery Solutions). "These are two areas that have been very successful so far because visitors have the opportunity to see for themselves what they can implement in their own agricultural business.", says Luciano Trentini, an agricultural expert and long-time coordinator of the dynamic areas that will be presented during the three days of Macfrut, at the Rimini Expo Centre from 8 to 10 May.

«We must not forget that Macfrut is the sector's trade fair par excellence, where exhibitors have the opportunity to show, in these specially equipped areas, to qualified Italian and foreign visitors, some of the main innovations in the sector in order to present the trends in the fruit and vegetable sector» explains Trentini. «The success of these dynamic areas in previous editions has allowed us to confirm their scale. In addition, this year we want to offer a further opportunity to those interested in production chains, a real information and training activity, in which participants can expand their knowledge to create a fruit and vegetable sector that is increasingly in tune with the new times, that is, increasingly innovative, efficient and competitive.»
There are many new features at Macfrut 2024. As for the field of pavilion C1 dedicated to fruit growing, there will be three very important species: table grapes, the product symbol of this edition of the fair; the pear tree, which has suffered some setbacks in recent years, but wants to revitalize itself; and the cherry tree, which thanks to technological innovation is able to guarantee new production opportunities.
In addition to the above-mentioned fruit species, there will be various types of anti-hail nets which, in addition to protecting the different species from hail, can have a positive influence on the physiology of the plants thanks to new materials that guarantee a better quality of the harvest. Data collection systems will be presented, as well as innovative irrigation systems that deserve more and more recognition in times of climate change such as the present.
The other dynamic area, in Hall A1, highlights the innovative aspects of the field operations of the production chain. As in the case of potatoes, the cultivation of which involves the whole of Italy, since at a commercial level it is also a major importer. Another related sector is that of tomatoes for industry, since Italy is the European leader in terms of production and, above all, industrial processing. Potatoes and tomatoes also arouse the interest of many agriculturally developing countries, which, through Macfrut, want to learn about European production practices.
For this reason, the dynamic areas become a learning space that, through guided tours, provides the opportunity to speak with the manufacturers of machines and equipment, or with the technicians of the companies that present their innovations, in order to obtain all the information necessary for the correct management of crops.
The area will also feature IV gamma (baby leaf) production systems, including varietal innovation, sowing and harvesting. A large part of the pavilion will be devoted to soilless cultivation techniques, such as for strawberries, table grapes, ginger and blueberries. In the field, there will also be no shortage of meteorological data recording instruments, innovative irrigation systems, photovoltaic-powered irrigation systems and frost control systems. These last aspects are of great importance to all producing countries, large and small, as the climate changes, temperatures rise and the amount of available water becomes increasingly less, while the demand for food increases. In both pavilions, visitors will find suitable forum areas where they can participate in short specialist sessions on different topics in the sector.
