There is only one day left to register for the beekeeping seminar that the Mesa Apícola del Maule organizes annually and which is now in its ninth edition. The meeting will feature a Mexican expert and will focus on topics on how to move towards modern and sustainable beekeeping.
The Secretary of Agriculture of Maule and president of the table, Claudia Ramos, invited beekeepers, companies and technical advisory services to pre-register for the Maule beekeeping seminar, an annual technical meeting that will be held in Talca on Next Tuesday, August 20th, starting at 9:30 a.m. at the extension center of the Catholic University of Maule.
“There are only a few days left until our Maule beekeeping seminar, which is going to be very interesting, especially with market issues in Latin America, how to make the pollination service sustainable and how to approach beekeeping from a social and environmental perspective. We invite everyone to this meeting that will be held next Tuesday in Talca, free of charge and in person. We also want to invite all citizens to join us at the beekeeping fair that will be held in the Plaza de Armas, where there will be a honey tasting, samplings and sale of beehive products.”, the regional minister pointed out.
The meeting It is expected to bring together more than 150 people linked to the beekeeping sector who will be able to receive first-hand information useful for their business decisions. In addition to the three exhibitions, a discussion has been organised for the first time with public and private actors to discuss the current situation and the challenges facing activity in Maule..
Maule leader in beekeeping
The CFT San Agustín Technical Training Centre is co-organising the activity, on this occasion with the support of the UCM through its extension centre, and the fair will be sponsored by INDAP and will feature around twenty stands. The representatives of the beekeeping organisations at the table are the ones who define the agenda and contact the exhibitors, thus consolidating a space for information and the exchange of experiences, knowledge and contacts.
The Maule region is leader in the number of hives nationwide with nearly 293 thousand hives equivalent to 21% of the entire country, in the hands of 1,720 natural persons and 72 legal entities, according to data from Odepa with information from SIPEC 2022, SAG.
Additionally, it must be considered that our region is one of the main fruit and seed growing areas in the country, second in fruit tree area with 90,729 hectares according to the CIREN fruit registry of 2022, species that mostly require bees for good production, so the pollination service is an important economic activity that reveals the dynamism and significance of the Maule beekeeping sector.
Program
The program will begin with the exhibition “Vision of beekeeping and its challenges” by Mexican Miguel Ángel Muguia, president of the CLAC honey network, Latin American and Caribbean Fair Trade Coordinator, a network made up of cooperatives of small producers from all over Latin America that export their honey directly.
Then the intervention will follow “The challenge of being sustainable in beekeeping management” by professional Lidia Gómez, veterinarian from the University of Chile, beekeeper and beekeeping specialist, technical advisor to Carmencita Export of the INDAP productive alliances program from 2015 to 2023 in the Metropolitan, Maule and Ñuble regions and teacher in different educational centers in the region.
Finally, the exhibition “A technical approach to the sustainable development of pollination” will be presented by Francisco Rey Martínez, Chilean beekeeper and queen bee breeder, founder of Pacific Queens, commercial company Rey Ltda. and Colmenares Tía Lola.
