The president of Frutas de Chile (formerly Asoex), Iván Marambio, lamented the serious situation in the Valparaíso region due to the fires that have already left hundreds of people dead and thousands of families homeless. «First of all, we send our deepest condolences to all the families who have lost a loved one during the fires that have affected the Valparaíso region. Likewise, we believe it is important to show solidarity with the thousands of families who have lost everything. Today is the time to work together and support, and for this reason, we place ourselves at the disposal of the authorities of the Ministry of Agriculture to coordinate the necessary support.»

He added: “So far, as far as our sector is concerned, we do not have information on affected partner companies. However, we know that we are facing very difficult times as a country, since the long drought that has affected various areas for more than a decade, as well as the climatic conditions that have accentuated the lack of rain and the presence of heat waves, have generated the favorable environment for fires to spread more easily. Therefore, we call on the community to follow the instructions of the authorities, both in the face of new emergencies and in the delivery of support to those affected.”

Finally, Marambio commented that, although Valparaíso is the region most affected by the fires, "we are constantly evaluating what is happening with the fires in O'Higgins, Maule, Biobío and La Araucanía, which according to the Conaf report, total more than 29 fires being fought today," he concluded.
