On July 31, the period of accumulation of cold hours officially ended, a factor of great relevance in the productive cycle of deciduous species.
The final report on the Evolution and Comparison of the Accumulation of Chilling Hours for the 2022-23 season, prepared by the Avium team, is now available; this report is based on the classic model, i.e. below 7.2ºC. The HF accumulation period, which begins with the onset of physiological dormancy, recognized as 50 percent of leaf fall (yellow leaf = leaf fall), ended on July 31.
It must be considered that each variety has a specific requirement for chill hours and its fulfillment is crucial, since it is directly related to the use of reserves that the plants have to start the following season. This factor is of great relevance for cherry orchards, since the quantity, quality, size and condition of the fruit depend, to a great extent, on said accumulation of chill hours.
For the third consecutive year, Avium published weekly monitoring of chilling hours in a comprehensive report, which is now available on our platform and which includes graphs of total chilling hours for the current season, the HF accumulation curve for last season and the average for the last 7 years.
