ACABAN ® 050 EC: Control of spider mites in cherry trees during post-harvest

Arañitas

During the post-harvest of cherry trees, Spider mites have become one of the most important pests, due to the irreversible damage they cause to the leaves..

Specifically, in this fruit species, We found Panonycus ulmi, commonly known as the red spider mite, and Tetranycus urticae, also called the two-spotted spider mite.

In the case of the red spider mite, it is usually easily recognized due to its intense red color, spherical shape and elongated hairs (when observed with a magnifying glass). Its appearance generally occurs during the post-harvest, from approximately December 15 onwards. However, sometimes its presence can also be observed pre-harvest.

The two-spotted spider mite is found in dry environments. It usually lives in groups of colonies on the underside of leaves. Unlike the red spider mite, this species produces silk in abundance, with the purpose of protecting itself from predators.

The damage that spiders cause in orchards, regardless of their species, It is generated by feeding, where a breakdown of the cellular tissue of the affected leaves occurs, emptying the cellular content, which ends up exposing the damaged area to radiation, increases transpiration, causing accelerated dehydration.

This damage is cumulative, irreversible tanning begins to appear on the leaves and photosynthesis decreases, even leading to accelerating the process of leaf fall.

Monitoring and sampling are essential to detect the early presence of these pest species, which allows for the development of an appropriate phytosanitary control strategy, and thus, avoid significant, severe and irreversible damage to the plant.

It is important to estimate the population levels of spider mites in the trees in the orchard and at the same time, identify the stages present; eggs, juveniles or adults, since depending on the product selected, control of some or all of them will be achieved simultaneously.

Our recommendation for proper control of these pests is ACABAN ® 050 EC, a broad spectrum acaricide, which acts mainly by contact and ingestion on the mobile stages of spiderlings (larvae, nymphs and adults). It also acts on the moulting process in larvae and has an anti-feeding effect on adults and suppresses oviposition in females.. ACABAN ® 050 EC also has action on eggs, which do not hatch or only give rise to inactive larvae. Its knockdown or “turning” effect is one of the fastest on the market, with effective control seen approximately 7 days after application, generating a prolonged period of protection in the plant..
