These applications would provide greater stability in terms of aggregates, as well as in soil porosity.

One of the most talked about problems in recent years in the world is soil degradation. This is triggered by various factors, both by anthropogenic action and by the hand of man.

These actions have triggered a decline in soil quality worldwide, as well as its capacity for conventional agricultural production, since the excessive application of fertilizers and soluble minerals has caused eutrophication, contamination of groundwater and soil degradation.

But, How does compost contribute to soil recovery?

Fertilizers have a negative impact on soils in terms of pH changes and deterioration in their structure, but with the application of compost, they contribute to achieving a soil with porous space, which allows for the development of gas and water flow processes and root growth, according to a study by the Agroforestry and Livestock Systems Research Group at the University of Tolima.

In this study, as the aerobic decomposition period increases, water retention increases. After 90 days, moisture retention was higher for all materials tested compared to an ideal substrate.

However, the application of composting can help reduce degradation and compaction, but more solid studies must be carried out to obtain biologically active compost to improve the physical, chemical and biological quality of soils.

In this regard, Tomás Vial, founding partner of Nova Agro, referred to the use of this material as an innovative and economically profitable way to contribute to soil recovery.

“At Nova Agro we see it very positively, and also, based on studies and applications by our clients, that this material is profitable for recovering degraded soils. What's more, it is a sustainable alternative and, moreover, it helps the pockets of producers. For this reason, at Nova Agro we call on everyone to trust in composting as a real option to help production in their orchards,” concluded Tomás Vial.

It is worth mentioning that compost-based products are available at www.novaagrochile.com.
