In order to analyze the global situation of agroecology and assess the importance it has acquired in the context of climate change, the seminar "Agroecological agenda: dialogues and future actions" will be held in the INIA Quilamapu auditorium in Chillán.
The activity organized by the Institute of Agricultural Research is scheduled for Friday, September 30 at 2:00 p.m. and includes presentations by international consultant Miguel Altieri, from the Latin American Center for Agroecological Research (CELIA); and local specialist Agustín Infante, from the Center for Education and Technology, CET Biobío.
The seminar also includes a panel of representatives from different areas of agriculture, including the national director of INIA, Iris Lobos; the regional minister of agriculture of Ñuble, César Rodríguez; the president of the National Confederation of Peasant and Agricultural Trade Unions of Ranquil, Osvaldo Zúñiga; the director of the Ñuble Farmers Association, Carlos Smith; and the head of development of INDAP, Sebastián Acosta.
Environmentally friendly agriculture
The general coordinator of the activity, INIA Quilamapu researcher Cecilia Céspedes, explained that agroecology is a discipline that is nourished by knowledge that comes from both the scientific world and the peasant world, giving way to agroecological principles and practices that, she highlighted, “they must be culturally relevant, socially just and economically viable.”
The agricultural engineer pointed out that with the seminar “We want to gather the concerns of society, to outline our future work," For this purpose, opinions and questions raised both in person and those received digitally will be considered.
Céspedes stressed that agroecology has gained greater importance and attention in recent decades, not only in Chile, but throughout the world, and that “AFC producers are the most aware of developing healthier agriculture that allows them to have healthier food and sustainable production.”
The free seminar can be followed in the INIA Quilamapu auditorium (Avda. Vicente Méndez 515, in Chillán), and also virtually through the Zoom platform and the INIA Chile YouTube channel, with prior registration being required for both modalities.
