{"id":27809,"date":"2023-10-20T09:31:18","date_gmt":"2023-10-20T12:31:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/smartcherry.cl\/?p=27809"},"modified":"2023-10-20T09:31:21","modified_gmt":"2023-10-20T12:31:21","slug":"inia-y-biofrutales-logran-importante-paso-para-inscribir-primera-variedad-de-cerezo-100-chilena","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/smartcherry.cl\/en\/manejos-agronomicos\/variedades\/inia-y-biofrutales-logran-importante-paso-para-inscribir-primera-variedad-de-cerezo-100-chilena\/","title":{"rendered":"INIA and Biofrutales achieve important step to register first Chilean cherry variety 100%"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>Collaborative work of more than 14 years between both institutions seeks, through genetic improvement, the first cherry created entirely in national territory.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Surely \u201cSelection 21\u201d (S-21) says absolutely nothing, it could even seem like something sporting, but if it is specified that it corresponds to the consecutive number of the selection that is on its way to becoming the first Chilean 100% cherry variety, the achievement speaks for itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-full is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"614\" height=\"559\" src=\"https:\/\/smartcherry.cl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/WhatsApp-Image-2023-10-17-at-15.39.58-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-27811\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.0983899821109124;width:436px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/smartcherry.cl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/WhatsApp-Image-2023-10-17-at-15.39.58-1.jpeg 614w, https:\/\/smartcherry.cl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/WhatsApp-Image-2023-10-17-at-15.39.58-1-300x273.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 614px) 100vw, 614px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Agricultural Research Institute (INIA) has been involved in research and development for over 14 years, in collaboration with the Biofrutales Consortium, working on the Cherry Genetic Improvement Program (PMG), with the aim of achieving a high-quality product with commercial potential adapted to the demands of the Chilean export industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The step taken by the S-21 has been to successfully overcome the first institutional link, by being approved unanimously by the <em>Regional Committee for the Release of New Varieties<\/em> of INIA, a milestone for regional and national fruit growing, awaiting the next steps that entail its full approval, protection, registration, and subsequent commercial cultivation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"466\" height=\"621\" src=\"https:\/\/smartcherry.cl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/WhatsApp-Image-2023-10-17-at-15.39.56-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-27814\" style=\"aspect-ratio:0.750402576489533;width:362px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/smartcherry.cl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/WhatsApp-Image-2023-10-17-at-15.39.56-1.jpeg 466w, https:\/\/smartcherry.cl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/WhatsApp-Image-2023-10-17-at-15.39.56-1-225x300.jpeg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 466px) 100vw, 466px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Regarding the technical aspects, the director of the Cherry Genetic Improvement Program and INIA Rayentu\u00e9 researcher, Dr. Jos\u00e9 Manuel Donoso, points out that <em>\u201cSelection 21 was selected in the Coquimbo region, and therefore, it has a natural genetic adaptation to the conditions of a warm temperate climate and, therefore, to regions with a low supply of winter cold. It has subsequently been evaluated in the central-southern part of the country, which expands its cultivation possibilities for the regions of Valpara\u00edso, Metropolitana, O&#039;Higgins and Maule. After five consecutive seasons of evaluation on the MaxMa 14 pattern, in the Rengo commune, it has shown medium vigor and a semi-erect growth habit, with excellent production in twigs of the year, which enhances the quality of the fruit, both at the harvest and post-harvest levels.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In concrete terms, it is a bicolor cherry variety, located in the Rainier segment, where it has a good flavor, is large and firm, with a greater propensity for larger jumbo and superjumbo sizes, good color and in very good condition after 30 days of cold storage, which confirms its export potential to distant markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/smartcherry.cl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/WhatsApp-Image-2023-10-17-at-15.39.56-1024x600.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-27815\" srcset=\"https:\/\/smartcherry.cl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/WhatsApp-Image-2023-10-17-at-15.39.56-1024x600.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/smartcherry.cl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/WhatsApp-Image-2023-10-17-at-15.39.56-300x176.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/smartcherry.cl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/WhatsApp-Image-2023-10-17-at-15.39.56-768x450.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/smartcherry.cl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/WhatsApp-Image-2023-10-17-at-15.39.56-1536x900.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/smartcherry.cl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/WhatsApp-Image-2023-10-17-at-15.39.56.jpeg 1600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cFor INIA Rayentu\u00e9, this is an important achievement, since our center has been a fundamental part of the entire evaluation process during these 14 years. The team of researchers behind all this work has carried out meticulous work to be on the verge of this important milestone today. This first step towards achieving the first Chilean cherry variety is very relevant, especially that it takes place in the O&#039;Higgins Region and in our center. We hope that the research and development that has been carried out will come to fruition and that we will soon be talking about the first national 100% cherry, of great quality and with a potential to be discovered. In addition, it has a high sweetness and is very firm to the touch according to Firmtech parameters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rodrigo Cruzat, manager of the Biofrutales Consortium, indicated that <em>\u201cBeing able to develop national genetics that are adapted to the demands of our industry and our end markets is a source of pride not only for the Consortium and for INIA, but also for the country. The size of the fruit industry and the cherry sector in Chile - being the main exporter in the southern hemisphere and one of the main ones in the world - cannot rely solely on foreign genetics and as such must take charge of its own challenges. Along with congratulating the work of INIA, we must acknowledge the support of the companies that support the program: Univiveros, El Tambo and ANA Chile, and of course the support of Corfo, which has been fundamental for this project.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Cherry Genetic Improvement Program is headed by Dr. Jos\u00e9 Manuel Donoso, genetic breeder, Jaime Ot\u00e1rola, Mg. Sc., fruit grower, and Boris Sagredo, Ph.D., molecular biologist, all professionals belonging to INIA Rayentu\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default
